5 Office Plants That Thrive in Low-Light Conditions​

1. Radiator Plant

Peperomias, also known as radiator plants, shun the sun. In fact, this variety won’t grow well in direct sunlight. They do require a bit of warmth but, as long as your office stays above 60 degrees, Peperomias will flourish.

These slow-growing indoor plants can bring variety to your office space, as you can choose from several different foliage varieties. Peperomia leaves can be compact and dainty or thick and fleshy, and the foliage comes in many colors, textures and shapes.

2. Fiddle-leaf Fig

The Ficus lyrata, or fiddle-leaf fig, is highly tolerant of low-light conditions and can handle average or above-average office temperatures.

Fiddle-leaf figs are gorgeous, with huge, dark green glossy leaves. Ficus lyrata is technically a type of tree, capable of growing to six feet or more in height. This makes them well-suited as floor plants and in larger office spaces.

3. Cast-Iron Plant

The cast-iron plant, or Aspidistra elatior, is one of the hardiest office plant varieties. They can survive in a wide range of lighting and temperature conditions – even in extremes that would kill other greenery.

Aspidistra elatior is a slow grower, with slender leaves that can reach lengths of 12 to 20 inches. The plants themselves typically average about two feet in height, making them ideal for use in planters.

4. ZZ Plant

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ plant, is another variety that thrives in lower levels of light and less-than-perfect growing conditions. Some gardeners say that these plants seem to thrive on neglect.

ZZ plants have thick, upright stems growing in a wand-like shape. Their leaves are a beautiful dark green with a glossy coating that almost makes them appear artificial. These office plants are slow-growing, but can achieve heights of up to three feet.

5. Moss Terrariums

For office spaces with very little light, a terrarium, or enclosed indoor garden, is a great way to add a touch of life. Moss is an ideal choice for a terrarium but a variety of small tropical plants can also grow well in low-light conditions.

Another reason to consider moss terrariums is that they are essentially self-sufficient and require very little maintenance.
